POTS & COWLS Fitted

A chimney pot and cowl are essential in finalising the installation of your wood burner or open fire. A chimney pot is  an extension on top of a chimney made from a terracotta/buff clay mould, they vary in height and shape depending on personal preference. There are also many varieties of cowls that can be fitted dependant on  fuel type; solid fuel, gas and oil.

Reasons for Different Cowls & Pots

  • To comply with regulations.
  • To prevent birds and other wildlife entering the flue.
  • To prevent unwanted rainwater.
  • To limit the downdraught - unnecessary  air being forced down the chimney (wind).
  • To help with the draw of the flue on short or bad drawing chimneys.
  • To secure flexible linings in the hanging position.
  • To enhance chimney ventilation.
  • Clogged cowls are easy to notice if there are problems within the flue.

Chimney Caps

The best practice for all unused flues is to cap and vent correctly. If the chimney has a pot on top, then a chimney cap can be used to help prevent unnecessary wildlife and water. If there is no pot on top then slate and mortar can be used to form a ventilated capping.
